Summer is a time when our network often sees donations decline just as many children lose access to school meals. The good news is that resources are available. If you or someone you know could use extra food support this summer, here are a few helpful programs:

  • SUN Bucks is a federal program that provides families with $120 per eligible child to buy groceries. Most eligible children will be automatically identified and enrolled in SUN Bucks, though in some cases, an application is needed. Learn more here.

  • Parks Tacoma’s Summer Meal Program provides free lunch to youth ages 18 and younger, Monday-Friday at parks across Tacoma. Before lunch, kids can also enjoy free games, crafts and other activities led by staff. Find a list of parks here.

  • The All Youth Can Eat Campaign is a summer youth feeding campaign organized by Kwabi Amoah-Forson and partnering restaurants. Starting July 1, kids 18 and under, and college students 18–24 with ID, can get a free meal every day of the week at participating restaurants in Tacoma. Check back here for the schedule.

    • Help with finding temporary or permanent housing solutions

    • Referrals to mental health providers and counseling services
    • Assistance with connecting to crisis intervention services or substance abuse support
  • Transportation Services

  • Workforce Support
    • Access to workforce development programs and job training opportunities
  • Family/Early Childhood Support
    • Access to information, referrals, and resources to families who are pregnant or parenting young children between the ages of 0 to 5 to address a wide variety of resource needs and parenting support

The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) pays heating bills directly to utility companies for eligible applicants living outside the city limits of Tacoma. Payments are based on eligible household’s fuel usage for the past 12 months and income.

Staple Food Bags

Did you pick up one of our food bags from your local food pantry? Each bag includes staples like rice, oats, or pasta—simple ingredients to help you create nourishing meals. Cooking instructions are listed on the back of each bag, and also below. You can use the accessibility toolbar in the top right corner of our website to translate the instructions or have them read aloud.

PASTA:

Bring 4-6 quarts of water to a rolling boil, add salt to taste. Add pasta to boiling water, stir to prevent sticking. Return to a boil, cook for 7-8 minutes. Remove from heat and drain pasta.

OATS:

3 1/4 cups water, 2 cups oats, 1/4 teaspoon salt (4 servings). Bring water to a boil, stir in oats, reduce to simmer, cook uncovered for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

RICE:

Ratio 1:2

1 cup rice, 2 cups water, 1/2 teaspoon salt. Boil water, add rice and salt, bring back to simmer. Cover and turn to low. Check in 18 minutes. Will be done in 18-25 minutes.
